session

An engagement session is the perfect way to prepare for being photographed on your wedding day.  I love these sessions because I really get a chance to get you know you as a couple... which allows me to capture your relationship in a more personal way.  And this goes both ways too!  I want you to feel like I'm a friend and not just someone you hired. This will help us all to be more comfortable working together on your big day, which will result in the most natural and organic imagery possible.

If the wedding package you have chosen does not include an engagement session it is never too late to add one on, just reach out any time.

01.

Your engagement session can be done at any time between now and the actual wedding day, just keep in mind that if you want to use the engagement images for anything (save-the-date cards, wedding website, guest signing book, etc.) I need approximately 2 weeks to process the images before any product can be ordered.  A safe bet is to contact me at least 2 months before you actually want to use the images.

By far the prettiest light of the day is that fantastic window of time just before the sun sets... this is referred to as golden hour.  I would highly recommend we aim for this time when scheduling your engagement session. Golden hour varies depending on the time of year so just shoot me an email and I can let you know what time we should aim for.
If we get to your scheduled session date and the weather isn't cooperating with us I will reach out to reschedule your session for a better day.

Your session can be done anywhere within a 45 minute drive of my studio.  I love shooting in new locations so if you have your own ideas then I'm all for it.  On the flip side if you would like some suggestions then I'm happy to help.
My blog is a great resource to use for reference as well. Feel free to browse and see if there is a location that you especially like. Be sure to choose something that is true to you, whether it be a park, or the waterfront, or an urban city walk... make sure it fits you as a couple.

I absolutely love dogs!  You are more than welcome to include your furry friend in your engagement session if that interests you.  All I ask is that you bring an additional adult to the session to manage the dog when we are doing shots of just the two of you.  It's also a good idea to arrive at least 20 minutes early to let pup explore and smell all of the smells and get out some energy.  Also bring some treats if you think that might help in getting pup's cooperation.

The key to outfit selection is to complement and coordinate with each other, but don't "match". The best way to achieve this is to choose a palette - at least 3 colours, but no more than 5 (denim, black, and white all count as colours). The best way to add interest and dimension to outfits is with different textures (a chunky knit cardigan, a flowy scarf, a denim jacket, etc.) Patterns are also awesome, just be careful to only choose one major pattern. Starting with the print and pulling the rest of the solids from that colour palette is a great place to begin.

Part of my job is to ensure that your day runs as smoothly as possible. One of the biggest factors that impacts the stress level and enjoyment of a wedding day is the

timeline.  I will work with you in great detail to create a timeline that is both realistic and relaxed so that you can enjoy every minute of the day without feeling rushed to quickly move onto the next thing.
In this section of the guide I will lay out the appropriate amount of time for each part of the wedding day to ensure that we get all of the pictures you will want as well as enjoying down town with each other and your loved ones.

This choice is becoming more and more popular in the wedding industry for a number of reasons. The most important being that it gives you a little slice of alone time as a couple to enjoy the extremely special moment of seeing each other for the first time on your wedding day. Secondly it creates a setting for raw and intimate images that you will cherish forever. And lastly it allows for a much more efficient and relaxed timeline overall.
I have written an in-depth blog post on the subject if you would like more information to help you make the choice that's best for you.

Reception events include (but aren't limited to) grand entrance, speeches, first dance, parent dances, candids of your guests dancing, cake cutting, bouquet toss, etc. I love staying for the reception because it allows me to tell the full story of your special day from beginning to end.

Dinner service takes on average 2 hours from beginning to end and this varies based on the number of courses and the length of speeches. You should have me stay at least one hour past dinner to ensure nothing gets missed. So if your dinner is being served at 6:30, I should stay until 10:00.

All of the people you love have come to celebrate and share in this day with you... of course you are going to want to document their smiling faces. The best time for me to do this is during cocktail hour as people are standing around and mingling. It allows to me get natural expressions without being obtrusive. Once your guests sit down for their dinner I stop photographing. I want to allow them to eat in peace without a camera hovering around.

If guest candids are important to you, then you will want to make sure the timeline allows for me to be present for at least 30 minutes of cocktail hour.

If you opt to have me join you for the "getting ready" portion of the day, the detail shots are a big part of that. I LOVE wedding details, and it's one of my favourite parts of the day to photograph. You spend so much time (and money) choosing every little detail and I want to be absolutely sure to capture everything beautifully!

Usually upon arriving at your getting ready location I will dive into the detail shots first, so it's very helpful to have everything gathered together and laid out for me ahead of time so that if you are in the middle of hair or makeup I don't have to disturb you and I can just hit the ground running. I thought it might be helpful to compile a little list for both the bride and groom of what sort of details photograph well together and how to get the most out of these photos.  Detail shots look fabulous to fill out album spreads as well if you were thinking of getting an album.

getting ready

location

Where you choose to get ready will have a big impact on your photos. While I do my best to create beautiful imagery no matter the circumstances, the truth of the matter is there are some key factors that make a simply stunning photograph. The first and most important thing to consider is the light. The more natural light I have to work with the better... this means big windows, light coloured walls and light textiles. Also consider clutter as it can be quite distracting. If you're getting ready at a house it should have a large bright master bedroom and/or living area. If you choose a hotel then consider upgrading to a suite for the extra space and additional windows. Another good option that's becoming more popular is renting a local air brb.

formal photos

location

Choosing the location for your formal photos is also extremely important. If you venue has grounds that we can use (like Ancaster Mill, Dyment's Farm, Whistlebear, etc.) then this is a simple decision, but if you need to choose an offsite location for your formal photos here are some guidelines and recommendations to get you started.

Shaded areas! Your formal pictures will likely happen midday when the sun is in the middle of the sky. This is unfortunately the most unflattering light. Since we likely can't adjust your timeline the best way to combat this is large shaded areas which are much more flattering. Think of locations with lots of trees or a few tall pretty buildings.

Space and variety! Locations with skinny pathways like trails won't work because I need to have room for a full bridal party to move around comfortably. We also want somewhere with a variety of different backdrops that aren't too far away from each other. I don't want all of your images to look the same so it's nice to have some different textures to work with, like buildings or wide paths or lush greenery.

unplug your ceremony

Personally, I love seeing guests with cameras at weddings. They want beautiful pictures of you because they love you, and they want fun candids of the event because they are having a great time and they want to remember it forever... I get it! And I support it! Having said that, guests holding up their cameras, phones and God forbid ipads at a ceremony can be very problematic. There isn't always space for me to position myself to avoid getting them in my shot of the aisle. This is the one half hour of the day that I wish guests would put their devices away. The quality of your professional images is my first priority.

Reception spaces are often difficult to photograph after dark or if there are no windows because I'm forced to use flash.  For the prettiest pictures please ask your venue about lighting upgrades such as "uplighting" or string lights.  And candles... as big and as many as you're allowed to have! These upgrades will cost money but will make a world of difference to your images.

Avoid any spotlights (even during speeches), table pinlights and colourful DJ lights during the first dance. Coloured lights should only fall on the walls, not on your faces.

The stars need to align for this to work, but if we can manage it you won't regret it!

We will check what time the sun sets on your big day and try to block out 10 minutes in between speeches to run outside. Obviously this is weather permitting and also depends on your reception location.

More often than not my clients tell me these golden hour shots are their favourite from the whole day!

print your

In this hyper-digital world some couples choose to not print their wedding photos, but I would like to take a minute to try and explain why I feel it is very important that you do...

Your wedding day (and your relationship that brought you to this point) is a story, intended to be told from beginning to end. Printing your photos in an album allows you to re-live that story in a way that an online gallery simply does not. Imagine looking through your wedding album together with your family during the holidays, and again on your anniversaries, and maybe even later with your children. Printing your photos in an album allows you to experience them the way your photographer intended.

You have commissioned your photographer to create art. Would a museum have the same impact if you could only scroll through a digital gallery on a screen? Art needs to be printed (and large) to fully convey the emotion and sentiment of the imagery. What better place to display an art piece that encompasses your love for each other than on the walls of the home you've built together.

Ultimately, the tangible value of deciding to print your wedding photos, whether as albums for your coffee table, art for your home, or gifts for your family, is unparalleled. Your wedding day deserves better than a Facebook album or USB drive that lives in your junk drawer. Photos are meant to be viewed, so make sure you’re giving those memories a chance to be re-lived – now and for generations to come!

Our 5x7 Luxe Cards are made with triple thick premium cardstock and include an optional colour insert. You can also choose from 7 different foil colours to make your custom cards truly unique.

We will work together to personalize your cards with the text and colours that reflect your style.

Your package includes a private online gallery of your full photo collection (this is in addition to your keepsake USB). When your collection is ready you will receive an email link to your gallery as well as a download pin.

You are welcome to share your gallery and download pin with whoever you'd like. This makes it very convenient to share your images with loved ones. There is no download limit, so share to your heart's content.

Your gallery will be active for 12 months, after which it will go into archive and can no longer be accessed.

Your sit down pre-wedding meeting with me will take place 2-3 weeks before the event at which time we will go over everything in detail. I will contact you to schedule this meeting, so don't worry about having to remember.

But please don't be a stranger in the meantime... I'm here to help!
